Kasatkina Wins First Match as an Australian
Daria Kasatkina has officially begun her next chapter in professional tennis - this time, as an Australian tennis star. In her first match under the Australian flag, the world No. 12 secured a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lauren Davis in the Credit One Charleston Open, marking a historic moment in her career.
For Kasatkina, this was more than just another win, it was the start of a new identity in international tennis. After playing as a neutral athlete since 2022, she recently obtained Australian permanent residency and will now represent Australia on the WTA Tour.
Emotional first match as an Australian tennis player
“I couldn’t handle my smile, even though I was a bit stressed before the match,” Kasatkina shared in her on-court interview. “Stepping on court with the new status, with the new flag, it was quite stressful. I had this little baggage of nerves, and it always explodes as soon as you step on court. I’m happy I was able to handle that.”
The 27-year-old Tolyatti-born athlete made the difficult decision to change national representation after spending the past two and a half years based in Dubai. Now, she is the top-ranked Australian WTA player, ahead of Kimberly Birrell (No. 62).
A strong start at Charleston Open
Seeded third, Kasatkina made quick work of Davis in just 61 minutes, showing exactly why she is one of the top female tennis players on tour. The Charleston Open holds special meaning for Kasatkina: she won her first WTA title at the event back in 2017.
With this victory, she cements herself as the leading force in Australian women’s tennis.
Kasatkina’s future as an Australian tennis star
“It’s my first official day as an Australian player. Honestly, it feels different, I’m not going to lie. It’s emotional for me,” Kastakina said. “I have to get used to it. But I’m really happy to start this new chapter of my life, representing Australia on the big stage.”
With Roland Garros 2025 approaching, Kasatkina’s presence on Team Australia adds depth to the country’s women’s tennis talent. As she continues her journey, all eyes will be on how far she can go wearing green and gold.
